“Well begun is half done.” ~Mary Poppins
My neighbor’s variation on this quote is “Just begun is half done.”…same thing though. FYI–Like Mary Poppins, my neighbor has the energy of 4 people. Nevertheless, she’s right. And I’ve found myself saying it over and over the last few days.
Perhaps some of you are familiar with the manic rushing around of trying to get your house ready to put on the market. I like to say I am the “Project Queen”!! Got my tiara and my sceptor! I have done more work in this house the last 3 days than I have in 3 years. (Though I’d like to take all the credit, I didn’t do it ALL myself…had some help from my sweet sister-in-law and her family, and hubby and kids.) I’ve scraped, primed and painted all the window trim, the garage trim, the porch railings. I’ve stained the deck. I’ve sent junk to the dump, Goodwill and to the small storage unit we rented, so we could “make our house look bigger” to prospective buyers. I’ve cleaned out closets. I’ve rearranged furniture. I tried to re-caulk my kitchen sink…I say “tried” because I got a defective tube of caulk and have had to put that job off till I can get new tube….grrr.) We cleared out an area where we lost a tree in a tornado a year ago, took about 10 tons of rocks from that area (I envisioned the previous owners bringing in a dumptruckload full of rock and dumping it), graded it, and then laid sod down. I’ve got to say, I think I can add painter, landscaper and professional organizer to my resume now. Whew! I am exhausted! And I can’t get all the deck stain off my body!!
In spite of the exhaustion, I do have a nice sense of accomplishment (and immense gratitude in my heart to all my helpers.) It is good to start a task and then actually complete a task. Oh how I wish I could find the motivation to do this all the time. I always ask myself when I am doing this is– WHY don’t we live like this ALL the TIME??! I mean, less really IS more, right?! Less furniture, less clutter = more space, more freedom. It does aggravate me, but when you don’t HAVE to do it, you don’t feel quite as pressed up about it. OH well. I’m doing it now, right?! And I just hope and pray that our hard work will pay off and someone will walk into this house SOON and love it and say “This is just for me!!” Say a prayer, y’all!
Meanwhile, the carpet guy is coming tomorrow and I’m waiting to hear back from a handy man so I can get my screen on my porch repaired. It just doesn’t seem to stop…you look around and the LIST just grows and grows. It will all get done…one thing at the time. And it helps keep my mind occupied. It’s a good thing. Gotta get that sign in the yard pronto!
I’m hanging up my tiara for tonight and I’m gonna rest my weary bones! So I can go full speed ahead tomorrow. I’ll be glad when all this hard work is finished and I can just go back to doing laundry! 🙂
